Mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell but regulate many other functions than mere enegery production.  Animal mitochondria perform their tasks using 37 genes encoded in their own genomes (mtDNA) and >1000 genes encoded in the nucleus.  This dual genome architecutre is a legacy of the endosymbiotic event ~2 billion years ago when a eubacterim and an archaebacterium began an association that lead to the eukaryotic cell.  This genomic fusion changed the history of life on earth and enabled the diversification of multicellular organisms that are the most prominent inhabitants of earch. The coevolution of these genomes has generated a ceulluar sytem where gene interaction and intergenomic interactions are fundamental aspects of normal function.  This website is devoted to exloring the complexities of how these interaction govern the evolutionof life, the variation in fitness among organimss and the eventual decline that is associated with aging and disease.
